Last week I learned a very valuable lesson.
I was called on to speak two times for two different events. One session was on the topic of golf and the other was on a topic I was less familiar with. While I spoke well in both sessions, I realized afterwards that I was far more comfortable speaking on golf. The words flowed smoothly, the audience was captive, and there was no hesitation. On the less comfortable topic I was nervous and had to think carefully about every word that left my mouth.
What I learned from the experience was that while speakers are paid to enlighten on any subject, there are some subjects that speakers should avoid. Instead of just chasing a cheque, speakers should pick and choose their topics so that they only come across in the most respected light.
In many cases this is true in business as well. There are far to many people that yearn to be a jack of all trades. Recognize what your strengths are, improve your weaknesses, and delegate those things which you are not entirely confident that you will be successful in.
